Improv Chatroulette

What's more entertaining that being connected to random people for an online video chat? Singing about them, to them.

Facebook "Like" App: A Real Sneaky Bastard

If Facebook apps are harmless then why are some of them such sneaky bastards? I logged in this morning and found a notification that someone "likes my photo." I clicked on the word "photo" as I normally do expecting it to take me to the photo in question. Instead, it took me to a page. WTF?

You have to look pretty closely to notice any difference between the fake and real "likes" - it appears to be how the link is formed.

I have no idea what this apps really does, but if it has to be that sneaky it can't be good.

Update: I guess the folks behind the "Like" app had to change things around a bit. This morning's latest notice was that "Lika" needed access...

Bacon and Spam Cakes

In this age of super healthy eating, there’s only one way to put bacon even further up the no-no listen than it already is: make it out of pure sugar. That’s what Debbie did for this fried eggs and bacon cake. The bacon is formed sugar while eggs are made of chocolate cake. Over the sweet foundations, both portions are painted and glazed to realistic perfection.

Free Pancakes at @ IHOP

IHOP has declared tomorrow National Pancake Day and is celebrating by giving them away. They are asking that you make a donation to Shriner's Hospitals. I'd do that anyway so as far as I'm concerned they are free!

Charge Your Devices via WiFi

DSC_3385

Thanks to WiFi signals, there is an amazing amount of electric energy just floating in the air at any given moment. RCA has found a way to harness that power and they are planning to release a charging device that works purely by snagging a WiFi signal. Supposedly, it is effective enough to charge a Blackberry from 30% powered to full in 90 minutes.

Hulu Lab's Closed Caption Search

Hulu Labs now offers closed caption searching adding a new dimension to video search. Instead of relying on your neighbors to properly label and tag clips (let's face it, my neighbors are all idiots) you can now search words and phrases contained in the closed caption feeds of the television shows. So the next time your trying to describe something you've recently watched, just type in a few words and email them the video clip.

Buzz Integration for Blogger

You'd think with Buzz and Blogger both being Google products that they would have tighter integration available before any other system. But as far as I can tell, there's no support other than basic RSS importing.

Business Insider's #1 iPhone App of the Week Isn't

Business Insider has named Google's Buzz web site formatted for the iPhone as the #1 iPhone app of the week.

Sillier still is that they not only mention the fact that its not an iPhone app, but they feel the need to list its price: free.

iPhone app: Wireless Headset for Skype

Mobiola Headset connects your iPhone to your PC and turns it into a wireless headset for VoIP programs like Skype. It works over WiFi and requires that a host application be running on the PC, but it works surprisingly well. The iPhone app costs $1.99 and the PC app is free.

Hulu Could Still Launch On The iPad

One rumor I’ve heard from an industry insider is that Hulu is working on an iPad-friendly version of its site that should be ready by the time the iPad hits the market. Hulu itself is still vague about its plans.

Taco Bell Stuffed Sausage

I don’t really have much to say about this, besides a guy stuffed a roll of sausage with a cheesy double beef burrito from Taco Bell.

Google Buzz

So, Google's getting into the Social Media space with their Buzz for Gmail. I'm not exactly sure why (or why I need this) except for the fact that Facebook is getting into the email business. So why not?

Apple Takes Another Shot at Google

First there's the rumor that Microsoft Bing will replace Google as the iPhone's search engine of choice. Then Apple banned the word "Android" from the App Store. And now in a posting to their iPhone Developer's Site Apple states with regards to location services:
If you build your application with features based on a user's location, make sure these features provide beneficial information. If your app uses location-based information primarily to enable mobile advertisers to deliver targeted ads based on a user's location, your app will be returned to you by the App Store Review Team for modification before it can be posted to the App Store.
Sounds like another shot to me...

Apple May Drop Price on iPad

TechDigest reports that Apple is set to lower the pricing on the iPad. Prior to the formal announcement I was on the fence about buying an iPad. And like others, I was less inclined after Jobs' presentation.

If I'm going to switch to a new device as my primary personal media device I really want it to play my Hulu and Netflix - I buy some things through iTunes but not everything.

And now that Apple is set to perhaps drop the pricing already (ala Phone 1.0) I'm officially holding off.

Update: now there is some talk that the iPad with a video camera is in the works. I guess everyone knew that already, but now that its "confirmed" that cinches it... no iPad for me this year. I swear.

Facelift

Recently Google has changed the way that users can publish their blogs, making it necessary to migrate my site from my own server to Google's. Not a huge issue (well, getting the DNS to take was a big deal, but that's another post) and I thought I would take the opportunity to make some changes to the look of russellholliman.com.

On the one hand, I really liked the custom template that I had been using. On the other hand though, Google offers a ton of new widgets that I couldn't use before. And since Google trashed my old template after the move...

So don't be surprised if the blog looks different with every visit over the next week or so. I'll be playing with the widgets, the layout, and if I can figure it out I'll be incorporating everything that I liked in my old template into the new one.
