Location-based apps: which one is the best?

Its all in the database.

All four of these were captured at the same spot from: Gowalla, foursquare, Brightkite, and Loopt. I guess it all depends on what you're looking for. (large image here)

I think the best one is the one that, when you try to start feeding all your data into Facebook or Twitter, responds with a message that says, "Oh, come on. Don't be a dick. Nobody needs to see that you're at Starbucks on your Facebook page."

Find it annoying? I've been guilty of that but I think I've stopped all the cross posting, except when I manually tag an entry.

I just though it was funny that on that one service someone had entered an escort service. How'd you like to see that pop up on Facebook?

It is pretty funny. Well, we all know what makes the internet go.

I don't use any of the services but I do see the appeal of being able to see which of your friends on them are nearby ("hey, I'm sitting here at Starbucks, is anybody else around?"). I just had a few too many Facebook contacts telling me that they were getting coffee, buying food, blah blah blah blah and wondered, "Why do they think anybody cares?" (Then i just blocked the apps.)

There's a big focus on integrating streams of data from different networks, but I don't think people have thought enough about whether this is useful or even desirable all the time.

(I mean, if you use Loopt to keep track of escort services and Twitter to communicate with professional contacts, integration is probably not wise!)
