Text Message to Land Line Phones

By pure accident, I sent an SMS text message to a friend's home telephone instead of their cell phone. Much to my surprise, I received a message back stating that it had been delivered to an "answering machine or voicemail" (he was not home at the time). That's when I learned that Sprint now has a "text-to-landline" service. Is this really new or have I just been out of it too long?

According to their site, the same rates apply as with normal text messages. It even gives the recipient (if they are home) the option to reply using text or voice - when the voice option was chosen (I have been playing around with this a lot lately) then I receive a text message that links me to the voice mail.

I've added a sample of what it sounds like to the addendum feed or your can download it here.

I'm getting these calls recently, but, I actually have my landline forwarded to a cell. Most times it goes to my voice mail. I've answered a few. I never call back. Is it possible I'm being scammed? Haven't seen anything on the bill yet. I got a phone number twice and looked it up on the internet, reverse look up, as a sprint cell phone in trenton NJ. I can get the name for a fee (no thanks) I'll check back for an answer
